The relationship and scope of the law

7:1-6 Romans 7:1-6
1 Now, dear brothers and sisters - you who are familiar with the law - don’t you know that the law applies only while a person is living? 2 For example, when a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her. 3 So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries.
4 So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead. As a result, we can produce a harvest of good deeds for God. 5 When we were controlled by our old nature, sinful desires were at work within us, and the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds, resulting in death. 6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.

Concerning our relationship with the law –
1) Application of the law to us only when we were alive. (v. 2)
2) The law aroused evil desires in us to produce sinful deeds that lead to dead. (v. 5)
3) We died to the power of the law when we died with Christ. (v. 4)
4) Now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. (v. 6)

As a result of our death towards the law, we are able to freely serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. (v. 6) and produce a harvest of good deeds for God.

Concerning the scope of adultery –
1)   Adultery exists outside the law of marriage. (v. 3)
2)  Adultery is not in effect if one party in the law of marriage is dead. (v. 2)
3)  The law of marriage and adultery is in force as long as both parities are alive. They have to abide by the law. (v. 2)
4)  A person is allowed to remarry only when the spouse is dead. In this case, the earlier law of marriage is annulled, and the spouse who is alive is released from the law of marriage, thus free to remarry. (v. 3)

The law is applicable only to living persons and not dead people. As Christians, we are not exempt from the law of marriage. We must keep our vows to our spouse as long as “we both shall live.” The sin of our modern society, even among Christians, is taking God’s word and the marriage vows too lightly.
