The Sabbath Day is a day of rest for us and all we have

5: 1215 Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Observe the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath Day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do. Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the Lord your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath Day.

As God’s people, we should follow the Lord’s instructions and observe the Sabbath Day to sanctify it. This means that we see this day as special and set it apart from the rest of the days. In six days, we laboriously do our work. But on the seventh day, we need to conscientiously rest, and make it our Sabbath Day, “no one in your household may do any work.” The Sabbath Day is not only instituted for us, but also for all the living creatures in our possession and jurisdiction, including our children, male and female servants, oxen, donkeys and other livestock, and the foreigners living among us. The Lord is especially kind towards the servants among us, so that they too might enjoy a day of rest like us. The Sabbath Day is also a day of commemorating the time the Israelites were in Egypt and how God in his greatness led them out of the place. For Christians, the Sabbath Day can be a time of remembering the God through our Lord Jesus Christ saved us from our sins so that we might have peace. Therefore Christians ought to set apart the Lord’s Day as holy, remember God and rest well. The Lord our God instructed us to observe the Sabbath Day.

We are dead to sin, but alive to God

6:5-11 Romans 6:5-11
Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was. We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.

When we reckon that the old sinful part of ourselves was crucified with Christ as it did, we can be set free from the power of sin and truly live a life of victory over sin. Sin and death no longer have power over us. Therefore we are dead to the power of sin and alive to God. We should live our lives for the glory of God.

“Are you not much more valuable than they?”

1.   The midwives, Shiprah and Puah who decided to fear God and let Hebrew boys live. “But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.” (Exodus 1:17) God repaid them for them faith in him by giving them families of their own. (Verse 21)

2.    Moses’ mum, Jochebed defied Pharaoh’s order and hid him for three months, risking her life to protect the life of the baby boy. (Exodus 2:1-2) God repaid her faith, and returned her child to her, with child-rearing expenses fully paid! (Verse 9)

3.   Moses’ sister, Miriam, linked Pharaoh’s daughter up with his mother. (Exodus 2:4, 7) For this, she received back her brother and could watch him grow to become Israel’s redeemer.

4.   Pharaoh’s daughter felt compassion for Moses. She also defied her father’s order and let the Hebrew boy live. (Exodus 2:6, 9) For her kindheartedness, she became Moses’ adopted mother and had the privilege to give him that name. (Verse 11)

5.   Zipporah, the Midianite priest’s daughter became Moses’ wife and gave him children. (Exodus 2:21-22) She brought comfort to Moses in a foreign land.

As God has time and again taken care of Moses and his life, he will surely take care of us at every stage of our life. God used many women to care, protect ad bless Moses' life. He can use the women in your life to do the same. God wants us to trust him for our future and not to worry about tomorrow because we are much more valuable than the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. (Matthew 6:25-34)

Let us no longer live in sin or walk in sinful ways

6:1-4 Romans 6:1-4
Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

We are people who have died to sin and were buried with Christ in his death by the sign of our baptism. So when Christ was raised, we were raised together with him in new life. Therefore, we no longer live in sin, and should no longer walk in any sinful ways, but live to glorify God in all we do.

Pain No More

July 20, 2011 — by Philip Yancey
(From: Our daily Bread, http://odb.org/ and http://chinese-odb.org/)

O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?

1551-57 Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:51-57

For a good portion of my life, I shared the perspective of those who rail against God for allowing pain. I could find no way to rationalize a world as toxic as this one. As I visited people whose pain far exceeded my own, though, I was surprised by its effects. Suffering seemed as likely to reinforce faith as to sow doubt.
My anger about pain has melted mostly for one reason: I have come to know God. He has given me joy and love and happiness and goodness. It leaves me with faith in a Person, a faith so solid that no amount of suffering can erode it.
Where is God when it hurts? He has been there from the beginning. He designed a pain system that, in the midst of a fallen world, bears His stamp. He transforms pain, using it to teach and strengthen us if we allow it to turn us toward Him.
He has hurt and bled and cried and suffered. He has dignified for all time those who suffer, by sharing their pain. But one day He will gather the armies of heaven and will unleash them against the enemies of God. The world will see one last terrifying moment of suffering before the full victory is ushered in. Then God will create for us a new, incredible world. And pain will be no more (Rev. 19:11–22:6).

He left His Father’s throne above,

So free, so infinite His grace!

Emptied Himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam’s helpless race. - Wesley

Pain will either turn us against God or draw us to Him.
