A Spirit-controlled mind

8:5-8 Romans 8:5-8

5 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. 6 So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. 7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. 8 That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

If our mind is dominated by our lustful, sinful nature, all that occupies our mind and heart are sinful things, such as those mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:19-21. The Scripture says,
“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.”

But if our mind is controlled by the Holy Spirit we will think about things that please the Spirit, such as those mentioned by Paul in Philippians 4:8,
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

Depending on who is in control of our mind, the results are very different and diametrically opposite; either for one whose mind is being dominated by sinful desires or one whose mind is Spirit-controlled. One leads to turmoil, darkness and death, while the other leads to peace, light and life. The final result is that a sin-dominated life would incur God’s wrath while the Spirit-controlled person walks in line with God’s will and pleases Him.
