以利亚敬、舍伯那、约亚对拉伯沙基说：「求你用亚蘭言语和仆人说话，因为我们懂得；不要用犹大言语和我们说话，达到城上百姓的耳中。」拉伯沙基说：「我主差遣我来，岂是单对你和你的主说这些话吗？ 不也是对这些坐在城上、要与你们一同吃自己粪喝自己尿的人说吗？」
Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Assyrian chief of staff, “Please speak to us in Aramaic, for we understand it well. Don’t speak in Hebrew, for the people on the wall will hear.” But Sennacherib’s chief of staff replied, “Do you think my master sent this message only to you and your master? He wants all the people to hear it, for when we put this city under siege, they will suffer along with you. They will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat their own dung and drink their own urine.”
