As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Who are we to argue with God?

Romans 9:17-24

For the Scriptures say that God told Pharaoh, “I have appointed you for the very purpose of displaying my power in you and to spread my fame throughout the earth.” So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen. Well then, you might say, “Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what he makes them do?”

No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, “Why have you made me like this?” When a potter makes jars out of clay, doesn’t he have a right to use the same lump of clay to make one jar for decoration and another to throw garbage into? In the same way, even though God has the right to show his anger and his power, he is very patient with those on whom his anger falls, who are destined for destruction. He does this to make the riches of his glory shine even brighter on those to whom he shows mercy, who were prepared in advance for glory. And we are among those whom he selected, both from the Jews and from the Gentiles.

There is a certain difference in “level,” “degree” or “type” of relationship between men and God – in this sense, it is a relationship of Creator-creature relationship, and this relationship cannot be “crossed.” He has the “right” to make us, from the same lump or raw materials, what He wants us to be! No questions asked. Even if He were to make some of us to serve as vessels just for decoration, others as vessels for use as the king’s cups, or even as receptacles for refuse, we don’t have the “right” to ask or choose. However God is very patient even with those whom He is angry. Thus, He will be even more merciful to those whom He had chosen for His glory.
The prerogative of God in creation and over this world is shown by the example of His choice of Pharaoh of Egypt, even though he was chosen as a vessel of wrath, that is, to be the instrument to show His power through the Israel’s victory over Pharaoh and to show His fame (name) throughout the earth. Thus, as the song goes, “Have Thine own way Lord, have Thine own way, you are the potter, I am the clay.” The lesson here today is: It calls for a surrendered life, to allow God to have His way in and through us, and to show His glory through us, just as He has shown His glory through Pharaoh, and broadcast the fame of His Name in all the earth.

Song: Have Thine Own Way (Adelaide A. Pollard)

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!
Power, all power, surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.

Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o’er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me.
