1:1-7 Romans 1:1-7
This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News. God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name. And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ. I am writing to all of you in Rome who are loved by God and are called to be his own holy people. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
Even though Paul said he was chosen by God to be an apostle and messenger of the good news of God, he also had the freedom to decide whether to answer God’s call into service, and to willing serve as the slave of God. He saw this calling to serve as both a very special privilege and solemn investiture of authority to be an apostle to proclaim to Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them. This is for the end-result that: a) they will believe, b) they will obey him, c) they belong to Jesus Christ, d) they will experience God’s love, e) they become his holy people and f) they will bring glory to his name by their faith, obedience and holy living. The most important thing is that we all are included (the gospel is an all-inclusive good news). No longer are the Gentiles excluded from God’s salvation and blessings. This is echoed in a later portion of this letter, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13) Praise God!
